A Beginner's Glossary of Fandom Slang
Launch library · evergreen read

Every fandom develops its own private vocabulary over time, shorthand terms for common situations, inside jokes that outsiders would need translating, and abbreviations that save time in fast moving conversations. Learning this vocabulary is often the real entry point into a community, more useful at first than knowing every detail of the source material itself.
Some slang spreads far beyond a single fandom and becomes general internet shorthand, while other terms stay stubbornly specific to one small corner of one particular community. Both kinds serve the same underlying purpose: they let members recognise each other quickly and signal, almost instantly, that they already belong to the same conversation.
New fans should not feel pressured to memorise everything at once. Most communities are happy to explain a term when asked directly, and picking up slang naturally through reading and participating tends to stick far better than trying to study it formally like a foreign language before joining in.
