Dressing as a favourite character at a gathering is a tradition considerably older than the term now commonly used to describe it, tracing back to early fan conventions where a handful of enthusiastic attendees first began wearing costumes simply to show their love for a favourite story in a visible, memorable way.
What began as a small, niche practice gradually grew into one of fandom's most visible and widely recognised traditions, evolving alongside advances in materials, techniques and shared knowledge that steadily raised the general standard of what a homemade costume could genuinely achieve and convincingly resemble on the day.
Today's cosplay culture still carries traces of that earlier, more modest history, even as techniques and ambition have grown considerably more advanced. The underlying impulse, wanting to physically embody something loved rather than simply watch or read about it, has remained essentially unchanged from the very beginning, even as everything else around it evolved.
