Sometimes being a good fan means recognising when a conversation, a debate, or even an entire fandom is no longer genuinely good for someone's own wellbeing, and choosing to step back temporarily rather than pushing through purely out of a sense of guilt or obligation to remain constantly, fully engaged with everything happening.

Stepping back is not the same thing as abandoning a fandom entirely, it can simply mean muting a particularly heated discussion, skipping a specific piece of upsetting content, or taking a short, deliberate break from a community during a genuinely difficult stretch without needing to justify that choice to anyone else at all.

Fandoms that respect a member's choice to step back, without pressuring them to immediately explain or justify it, tend to be healthier places overall, since respecting personal limits is itself a genuine form of the same care and consideration that good fandom asks members to extend outward to one another.
