Every online community holds a natural mix of brand new members and longtime veterans, and the relationship between these two groups shapes a great deal about how the wider space actually feels day to day, whether genuinely welcoming and open or quietly closed off and difficult for anyone new to properly enter.
Veterans carry institutional knowledge and history that newcomers simply have not had time to accumulate yet, while newcomers bring fresh energy, fresh questions and fresh enthusiasm that can genuinely revitalise a community that has perhaps grown a little too settled and comfortable in its own long established, familiar ways.
The healthiest communities treat this relationship as genuinely mutual rather than hierarchical, with veterans mentoring generously rather than gatekeeping defensively, and newcomers respecting established history rather than dismissing it outright as simply old fashioned or no longer particularly relevant to how the community actually operates and behaves right now.
