Fandoms develop their own private nicknames for characters, pairings and even fellow fans, shorthand that grows organically out of repeated use rather than any deliberate decision, until eventually a fondly used nickname becomes more common within the community than the original, official name it quietly replaced over time for most regular members.
In-jokes work similarly, building slowly from a single memorable moment, a funny mistake, an unexpectedly quotable line, that gets referenced again and again until it becomes a small piece of shared cultural memory understood instantly by anyone who has spent enough time genuinely present within the community's ongoing conversation.
This shared language does real work beyond simple humour, signalling belonging and creating an immediate sense of familiarity between fans who might otherwise be complete strangers to one another. Learning a fandom's nicknames and in-jokes is often one of the clearest, quickest signs that a newcomer has genuinely settled in.
