Fan artists often study official artwork closely, poses, colour choices, character proportions, to better understand how a character was originally designed and rendered. Referencing this material thoughtfully is a completely normal, widely accepted part of learning to draw a character convincingly and consistently across many different pieces.
The distinction that matters is between studying a reference for genuine learning and directly tracing or copying it wholesale and presenting the result as original work. Most fan communities are comfortable with the first and quietly uncomfortable with the second, since it blurs the line between practice and simple imitation.
Being transparent about references used, mentioning them openly when relevant, keeps this practice healthy and honest within a community. It also helps other learning artists understand exactly how a piece was built, which quietly turns one person's individual reference study into a small, generous teaching resource for others further along the same path.
