Most online communities have some form of posted guidelines, yet many members genuinely never read them closely, which means the actual, lived culture of a space often matters considerably more in practice than whatever is formally written down in an official document nobody really consults after their very first day.
Guidelines that actually get read and genuinely followed tend to be short, clearly written and consistently, visibly enforced, rather than long, dense documents that quietly discourage anyone from bothering to properly read them all the way through in the first place before simply diving straight into the community itself.
The most effective communities treat guidelines as a living, evolving reflection of how members actually already behave, rather than as a rigid, static rulebook imposed entirely from above. Updating them occasionally, based on real, lived experience, keeps guidelines feeling genuinely relevant rather than quietly outdated and largely ignored by newer members.
