Spoiler etiquette exists to protect the experience of fans who have not yet caught up with a story, and it rests on one simple, guiding principle: assume other people have not seen or read what you have, and give them a genuine choice about whether to encounter certain details early.
Good practice includes clear warnings before discussing anything recent, using spoiler tags or blank space where a platform allows it, and being patient with people who ask that a specific topic be avoided for a while. None of this restricts genuine discussion, it simply delays it until everyone can participate on equal footing.
Etiquette naturally loosens as a work ages, since a story considered fresh for a year is eventually treated as common shared knowledge within its community. Even then, a considerate fan checks before assuming a much older detail is universally known rather than simply spoiling it without warning or thought.
