Quoting another member's post to respond or build upon it is common practice in most online fan communities, but doing it respectfully means representing what they actually said accurately, rather than subtly twisting their meaning to make a rebuttal easier or more convincing to onlookers reading the exchange afterward.
Good etiquette also means considering whether a quote is really necessary at all, since excessively quoting someone purely to publicly criticise them can tip quickly from genuine discussion into something that feels considerably closer to a pile on, especially once other members start piling in eagerly on the same original quoted post, one after the other.
Communities that maintain healthy quoting norms tend to have more genuinely productive disagreements overall, since participants trust that their actual words will be represented fairly rather than selectively cherry picked purely to make them look unreasonable in front of a wider, watching audience of onlookers.
