Experienced fans who have been part of a community for years often carry a wealth of quiet, hard won knowledge, its history, its unwritten customs, its occasional past disagreements, and choosing to generously share that knowledge with newcomers rather than simply gatekeeping it makes a genuinely lasting difference over time.
This generosity shows up in small, unglamorous ways: patiently answering a question that has probably already been asked many times before, pointing a newcomer toward a helpful older resource, or simply taking the time to properly explain some context behind an in joke rather than leaving someone confused and quietly excluded.
Communities blessed with genuinely generous, experienced members tend to onboard new fans far more smoothly than those without them, since institutional knowledge gets passed on deliberately rather than being lost entirely each time an older, more experienced member eventually and inevitably moves on to other, newer interests somewhere else.
