Every healthy online community tends to have a handful of informal leaders, people who are not necessarily official moderators but whose steady, consistent presence and reasonable tone quietly shapes how the whole group actually behaves, simply by setting a clear, visible, worthwhile example that everyone else naturally chooses to follow.
These leaders often earn their quiet influence through reliability rather than any formal authority granted to them: showing up consistently, engaging fairly with disagreement, and treating newcomers with genuine patience over a long enough period of time that other members naturally start to notice and quietly follow their lead over time.
Communities that lose their informal leaders, through burnout or simply moving on to other interests entirely, often struggle noticeably afterward until someone new gradually steps into that quiet, unofficial role. The position itself matters considerably more than any specific individual person who ever happens to fill it at any given time.
