The Small Traditions Online Communities Keep

Online communities develop their own small, recurring traditions over time, a weekly discussion thread, an annual celebration of the community's founding, or a running joke that gets gently revived every single time a particular topic happens to come up again in ordinary conversation among the community's own established, longtime members.
These traditions matter because they give a community a shared, ongoing history that new members can eventually be welcomed into and slowly learn, rather than the group feeling like a blank, featureless space with absolutely no memory or continuity stretching back before their own arrival within it at all, ever.
Keeping traditions alive usually falls to a small, dedicated group of longtime members who remember why a particular custom started in the first place and quietly make the effort to keep it going, year after year, long after the original reason has quietly faded from most members' shared, collective memory.
