Smaller meetups run on somewhat different etiquette than large conventions, since everyone present is closer together and far easier to notice individually. Introducing yourself, respecting personal space, and reading the room before joining an existing conversation all go much further in a small group than they would in a big one.
Punctuality matters a great deal too, since a small meetup can be thrown off entirely by just one late arrival holding up everyone else's plans. Messaging ahead if running late is a simple courtesy that keeps trust strong within a group that will very likely meet again soon.
Because meetups often repeat with roughly the same familiar people, behaviour tends to be remembered for far longer than at a one off convention. Being warm, reliable and genuinely easy to include is really what earns someone a standing invitation to the next gathering. Consistency, more than charisma, is usually what a small group quietly values most.
